Following the madness of the West Berkshire School to set a personal development target of losing her accent to a teacher from Cumbria, PM, the Radio 4 show, is having an ‘Accent Week’, celebrating different regional accents. This has been in response to the crazy story from West Berkshire read the story.
The story resulted in unprecedented numbers of responses from listeners, who were appalled by the actions of the school and also to point out that we have such a variety of accents in this country that we need to celebrate rather than neutralise these!
PM is going to feature a different regional accent each evening, reading the news headlines. Accents that are not heard often on the radio, will be featured. I can’t wait! I just hope there isn’t a fake Brummie accent (again!) But it will be a fabulous way of showcasing some awesome accents that we don’t hear very often on the radio. I just hope the head teacher from the school in West Berkshire has smelling salts ready. It is clearly going to be a traumatic time for him/her not hearing a Berkshire accent.
