The internet has resulted in us all being very much more visible than before as we all have an online profile and footprint. As it is still relatively early days, the whole etiquette of engaging with others online is still being set.
In this week’s Superstar Communicator podcast I share top tips on how to engage effectively with acquaintances on the i internet. We all have plenty of ‘contacts’, ‘friends’ and ‘leads’ on social media, but it does not mean they are friends or that we should demand too much from them. I always use the analogy that we wouldn’t go up to someone we recognised in the street that we don’t actually ‘know’; and ask them to promote conference or business – because they know nothing about you!
The podcast cites examples I’ve heard (and experienced) recently, where the line has been crossed. We have all, to different degrees, experienced people thinking they ‘know’ us because they read our blog or are in a group we’re in on Facebook, and then make demands, without building up a relationship first. For all sense of purpose we are strangers!
I also give examples and tips on how to behave. Remember, you can damage your reputation and brand by annoying someone!
