Engaging your audience

Engaging with your audience, whether you are speaking one to one, a group, presentation or public speaking, is an art in itself. We often focus on the words and vocabulary we use when writing copy for websites or blogs, but it is equally important to consider this when speaking to others. In the latest Superstar Communicator podcast, I interview the wonderful Simon Burton from Exposure Communications.

 

In the lively podcast interview, Simon shares lots of ideas about altering specific words or emphasis on words in order to modify  the meaning of what you say. We are aware of punctuation and the impact it makes on the meaning  of a sentence we have written, but adding a pause (full stop) or even a slight break (comma) can alter the impact you make with your audience. Simon also talks about how we word emails – including how we greet the other person at the beginning of an email, can influence the relationship with the other person. ‘Hiya’ might be just right with someone you know really well, but might completely ruin a potential client relationship! More than anything else, the podcast demonstrates how language and how we SAY it makes or breaks a business relationship.
