Ah! It is that time of the year where plenty of people suffer from itchy eyes, sneezing and in some cases, even worse symptoms. Here are some top tips for managing with hay fever. Listen to our podcast on hay fever remedies here.
Hayfever is caused by pollen irritating the nasal passages; individuals who have hay fever are allergic to specific pollens. The symptoms can be quite mild: sneezing or itchy eyes and nose, but unfortunately there are some people who suffer extreme symptoms, including difficulty breathing and it can trigger asthma attacks. I am not a doctor, and if you have extreme symptoms, always go to a GP for advice. Here are some tips for managing less extreme symptoms.
Anti histamines are good! Taking one a day reduces the symptoms, but there are other things you can do to manage the symptoms.
- Changing your clothes after you have been outside, and washing your hair. This will get rid of any pollen that is on your clothing and hair, so you won’t continue sneezing.
- Drink plenty of water. This is particularly important for people who are taking medication such as inhalers or steroids, as these dry the nasal passages resulting in irritation to these areas (and the body producing more mucus).
- When you have been outside, gargle with salt water (or saline solution) and also squirt saline solution up your nostrils. Yep: it sounds bizarre, but it will cleanse any pollen that is in your nose and nasal passages!
- There is a lot of medical evidence that having a spoonful of LOCAL honey to you, helps your body to build up immunity to local pollen. See if your local farm shop or farmers market has locally produced honey, or contact the British Beekeepers Association to recommend a local producer.
5. Putting vaseline around your nostrils can capture some pollen before it goes into your nose. Yep: it sounds weird but it does work! Listen to the podcast
6. Keep your doors and windows closed; then your indoor environment will be largely free of pollen.
As you can see, there are a number of simple things you can do to try to manage the symptoms. There are more ideas on the podcast to assist you.
