I am often asked how to be a great podcast guest. It is more than contacting podcasters and showing up.
Last week I delivered a 15 minute live stream masterclass on being a Podcast Guest. Marketeers are increasingly recommending being a podcast guest as a very effective way of reaching new audiences; sharing your expertise and knowledge to raise awareness of your brand. But how do you get on a podcast? And how do you make the most of the opportunity including how you can engage with the audience afterwards?

Three immediate tips for you to consider are:
- Researching the podcasts you are going to pitch for. There is no benefit of pitching to multiple podcasters with cut and pasted messages rather than tailored messages. I receive pitches every day; it is evident that the majority of the pitches are not tailored and the pitcher hasn’t listened to my podcast or researched me, the podcast host.
- Have a conversation with the podcaster beforehand to establish the content of the interview. You will then have a chance to prepare; with great examples to highlight your expertise. This is a huge opportunity for you to build up trust with the host. Remember they know other people – as well as other podcast hosts. Build up your network by building rapport.
- Avoid selling. This is a conversation and should be of real value to the audience and the podcaster. If the audience is bombarded with a sales pitch, they will switch off and the podcaster risks losing his or her followers. Also, the podcaster will be able to edit out sales pitches within an interview. Why not provide excellent content for the audience to contact you for more!
- Consider what else to do with the opportunity? Remember that if you offer opportunities to share the interview to your followers, clients and newsletter lists, it will have a bigger reach for the podcast. However, it also demonstrates your credibility. Think about how you could share this content innovatively.
