Managing negative press and smear campaigns is part and parcel of being a politician and the election. The Right Honorable Grant Shapps, who is my local MP is currently dealing with a crisis.
Shapps had already been discovered and accused of running a company under a false name: Michael Green. Now he has been accused of unfavourably editing rivals’ Wikipedia entries, whilst boosting his own entry. he denies these alegations.
Obviously with the Election so close, there has to be some serious crisis management – and also pointing the finger at other people! In this week’s podcast I share tips for people that have been accused of wrong doing; something we all have to put up with at work at some time.
The tips include:
- Get advice and support from an outside person/organisation
- Plan a message to deny/defend yourself
- Have the opportunity to state this; don’t be silent
- Ensure your delivery – voice and body language is confident when you defend yourself.
Good luck; I hope you don’t have to deal with managing negative press!
